Washington D.C., February 3, 2021

In a historic move, the U.S. Senate has confirmed Pete Buttigieg as the 19th Secretary of Transportation. Buttigieg, a former South Bend mayor and Democratic presidential candidate, becomes the first openly gay person to serve in a Presidential cabinet position.

Buttigieg's nomination was endorsed by President Joe Biden, who has pledged to build a diverse and inclusive administration. Buttigieg's confirmation marks a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in government.

As Secretary of Transportation, Buttigieg will be responsible for overseeing a vast network of infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and airports. He is expected to focus on modernizing transportation systems, improving safety, and promoting clean energy initiatives.

Buttigieg's appointment has been met with praise from both Democrats and Republicans. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called Buttigieg "a highly qualified and experienced leader who will bring a fresh perspective to the Department of Transportation." Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said he was confident that Buttigieg "will do a good job."
